How Ion Exchange Works

Hard water enters the mineral tank.
Calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions attach to the resin beads.

The resin releases sodium (Na⁺) or potassium (K⁺) ions into the water.

The water leaves the softener with hardness minerals replaced by sodium or potassium.


When the resin becomes saturated, a brine solution regenerates it by washing away the calcium and magnesium and recharging the resin with sodium.

While removing scale improves heat transfer and efficiency, studies have shown softened water can increase corrosion rates and accelerate sacrificial anode consumption under some conditions, which may shorten the service life of certain water heaters if not properly maintained.
